Velma Appears To Be Lesbian In New Scooby Doo Movie

‘In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script’ scribe James Gunn wrote. ‘But the studio just kept watering it down‘

Scooby-Doo character Velma Dinkley appears to be a lesbian according to a new clip from the franchise’s latest film.

In the series’ new animated movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! Velma appears to be romantically interested with a new character, costume designer Coco Diablo. The character’s sexuality has been speculated by fans in the past though has never been explicitly addressed by the series as of yet.

“OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY CANON CANON IN THE MOVIES LETS GOOOOOO,” said one Twitter user reacting to the series’ direct suggestion of her sexuality.

Velma has served as the love interest of fellow Mystery Inc. member Shaggy Rogers in 2010’s live-action follow up to James Gunn’s series Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster. Shaggy expresses interest in Velma romantically though the relationship does not develop as the two agree there is no chemistry agreeing to stay friends by the end of the film. Shaggy and Velma are in a relationship in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, which ran from 2010-2013, though the relationship does not last as Shaggy cites he’s not ready for a girlfriend.

In 2020’s Scooby-Doo, Gunn said in a now-deleted tweet, “in 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” he wrote. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

Gunn continued:

The movie was originally meant to be PG-13 and was cut down to PG after, like, three parents were outraged at a test screening in Sacramento. The studio decided to go a more family-friendly route … Language and jokes and sexual situations were removed, including a kiss between Daphne and Velma. Cleavage was CGI’d over. But, thankfully, the farting remained. I thought at the time the rating change was a mistake … I felt like a lot of teens came out for the first film and didn’t get what they wanted (and didn’t come back for the sequel). But today I don’t know. So many young kids loved those movies, which is pretty cool.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Mystery Inc’s Daphne Blake, appeared to corroborate Gunn’s statement in a 2002 interview with Sci Fi Wire.

“We did kiss. It got cut,” said Gellar in a statement to the outlet. “It wasn’t just, like, for fun. Initially in the soul-swapping scene Velma and Daphne couldn’t seem to get their souls back together in the woods. And so the way they found was to kiss and the souls went back into proper alignment.”

“I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay,” said Tony Cervone, who was the supervising producer on the franchise’s Mystery Incorporated series, in June 2020.

We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why. There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post reset, they are a couple. You can not like it, but this was our intention.
