On Wednesday, the Recording Academy and CBS announced they are postponing the 64th annual Grammy Awards ceremony.
The awards were initially scheduled for Jan. 31.
“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community, and our many partners, the Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards Show,” the two parties said in a joint statement.
“The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on Jan. 31 simply contains too many risks.” the statement continued.
The Jan. 31 show would have been to first to see winners chosen directly from votes from its own academy members. A stark change from the previous award protocol. In 2021, the Recording Academy said that it would stop using anonymous review committees after facing intense criticism from prominent artists.
No other details about a future date are available at this time.
