Kevin McCarthy Directs U.S. House to Investigate Manhattan DA Who Indicted Trump

Committees will explore whether federal funds were used to further the indictment of Trump, which many see as politically-motivated

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) says he is ordering committees to open investigations into whether federal funds were used by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in his investigation and indictment of former President Donald Trump.

“Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump,” McCarthy said in a Mar. 31 Twitter post, the morning after the first-ever indictment of a sitting or former U.S. president.

“I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions,” McCarthy added.

In a previous post, the day the historic prosecution of Trump was announced, McCarthy excoriated the DA’s office, calling the effort an injustice that is designed to impact the 2024 presidential election.

“Alvin Bragg has irreparably damaged our country in an attempt to interfere in our Presidential election. As he routinely frees violent criminals to terrorize the public, he weaponized our sacred system of justice against President Donald Trump,” he wrote. “The American people will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account.”

While much of the attention surrounding Bragg’s case has been centered around an alleged $130,000 hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, CNN reported that Trump is facing more than 30 counts related to business fraud.

The indictment is currently sealed, but is widely expected to be released to the public once Trump is arraigned next week.

McCarthy was joined by numerous other prominent Republicans who also blasted Trump’s indictment as a politically motivated miscarriage of justice.

“Alvin Bragg is a NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT to our justice system. President Trump has been proven to have done NO wrong. This is nothing more than a political stunt to prevent Trump from becoming President in 2024! WITCH HUNT!” Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) wrote on Twitter.

“A week ago a video circulated of a lunatic harassing a family on a New York subway. He hurled racial slurs (the family was white) and threatened them. Alvin Bragg thinks that man should walk free and Donald Trump should go to jail for a fake misdemeanor. It’s despicable,” U.S. Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) posted to Twitter.
