Democrats to Hold 2024 National Convention In High-Crime City of Chicago

The location, just south of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, highlights the critical role the midwest will have in shaping the outcome of the 2024 election

Democrats are being mocked online following the announcement that their 2024 national convention will be held in Chicago, a crime-ridden city that has been under the party’s near complete control for roughly 100 years.

Next year, the convention will be held Aug. 19-22 at the United Center. Party officials consider Illinois along with Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota part of a “blue wall” that was crucial to Democrats’ success on the 2022 midterms elections, according to a statement by the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

The last time the DNC convention was held in Chicago was 1996, when former President Bill Clinton was re-nominated.

“Chicago is a great choice to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention,” President Joe Biden is quoted as saying in the statement. “Democrats will gather to showcase our historic progress including building an economy from the middle out and bottom up, not from the top down.”

But, conservatives and Republicans wasted no time in pointing out the irony of holding the convention in a city with metrics highlighting nearly a century’s worth of problems caused by a political party that has enjoyed complete control. Chicago hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1927, while it’s city council has not a single Republican member.

Chicago’s unfunded pension liabilities top $46 billion, which slightly shrank in 2021 after officials siphoned funds for pandemic relief to cover them, after decades of mismanagement.

And by the end of 2021, the number of shootings in the Windy City “left more people dead than any single year in a quarter century,” according to police statistics cited by NBC Chicago.

“The DNC announced their 2024 convention will be held in Chicago. Because nothing says ‘look at what Democrats can do!’ quite like a city ravaged by crime,” Jenna Ellis, talk show host and former Senior Counsel for President Donald Trump, wrote on Twitter.

“On the same day that the Democrats announced they would be hosting the 2024 DNC in Chicago, Walmart announced they were closing four of their stores in the city,” Michael Seifert, CEO of conservative business directory PublicSq., wrote on Twitter.

“Will they be providing complimentary bulletproof vests?” Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert, a Republican, rhetorically asked her Twitter followers.

A conservative account using the moniker Proud Elephant wrote on the platform: “JUST IN: The DNC has chosen crime-ridden Chicago to hold their 2024 convention. Is that the only place that would accept them?”

Crime spiked 40 percent under Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who just weeks ago lost her election bid, making her the first Chicago mayor in 40 years to lose reelection.

Brandon Johnson will lead the Windy City following his win over Paul Vallas in last week’s run-off election.
