3:02 So, a better way to sum up a Republic (regardless of the “democratic institutions” which always exist in a Republic), is it is the equilibrium of Monarchy, Aristocracy and Democracy. The attempt at combining the quick response of the Monarchy, the stability of the Aristocracy and the freedom of Democracy. Democracies are by far the most turbulent of governments, and the quickest to end itself (into Monarchy typically). Monarchies become tyrannical over time, but so long as there is a clear line of succession, pretty stable but also allows for quick responses to emergency crisis. Aristocracies are stable in that they are ruled by the “best” or “better men”, until money corrupts and Oligarchy is installed. Each of these have pros and cons, but together (the Republic – which comes from res publica, of which we are referring to the Roman Government – prior to 27 BC) creates a stable, free government that can thwart threats, foreign and domestic.
