Elon Musk might be the most recognizable face of the popular tiny house movement.
The business magnate and tech entrepreneur reportedly rents a $50,000 building that measures roughly 400 square feet.

Last year, Musk tweeted his intention to give up “almost all physical possessions” including houses.

The Tesla co-founder has an estimated net worth of $160.4 billion. He’s been steadily selling off his real estate holdings, earning an estimated profit of $19.2 million on his home sales over the past year.
The term tiny house generally refers to buildings between 100 and 400 square feet. By contrast, a new single-family home in the United States is a median of 2,301 square feet. Tiny homes became popular around 2007 as an affordable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional homes. Their minuscule sizes tend to save owners on utilities and encourage a minimalist lifestyle.
Located near his SpaceX headquarters in Boca Chica, Texas, Musk is suspected to be the secret client of Boxabl. The company’s houses “have a unique, flat-pack design that allows them to break down to 8.5 feet in width and be delivered onsite via truck, train, air or ship.” The structures can withstand hurricane-strength winds and won’t grow mold or deteriorate due to moisture from floods because they are made without wood or sheetrock.
The relocation “makes Musk part of a broader tech exodus from Silicon Valley, with many executives and venture capitalists moving to Texas. It could also save Musk billions of dollars in taxes,” says CNBC.
It is not clear if Musk inhabits his Texas tiny home with his family. The 50-year-old shares custody of his 5 teenage sons with his ex-wife, Justine Wilson, and has a one-year-old son with his girlfriend, the Canadian musician Grimes.
Neither Boxabl, SpaceX, nor Musk has confirmed the specific details of his home.
