The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has formally announced the list of nominees for 2022, hoping to improve its goal of diversifying the awards.
The Golden Globes fell under immense scrutiny in recent years for its lack of diversity in both the awards and the leadership.
Last year, amid the controversy, NBC announced it would not air the next ceremony because of ‘ethical lapses by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The leadership of the H.F.P.A., who have all been subject to scandal and criticism, went ahead and announced their list of nominees on Monday.
Showing some signals of increased diversity and inclusion, the list did include nominations that differ from previous trends. The drama category nominees include “The Power of the Dog,” “King Richard,” and “Belfast,” while in the comedy and musical categories, significant attention was given to “West Side Story,” “Licorice Pizza” and “Don’t Look Up.”
It remains to be seen if these nominations, along with improvement from the leadership, will be enough to change the sentiment surrounding the H.F.P.A.
Hollywood has predominately avoided the H.F.P.A. after a series of reports in The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times revealed financial and ethical lapses within a closed membership. Those reports noted that the H.F.P.A. had no Black voters.
Since those reports were published, the H.F.P.A. has claimed that it is cleaning up its act, announcing last week that the group has admitted its “largest and most diverse class to date of 21 new members.”
The awards themselves will be a barometer of how the general public reacts to the potential changes and progress and the influence of the newly admitted members.
