A Tennessee youth soccer coach who was arrested in late June on suspicion of raping unconscious boys is an illegal immigrant, police say.
Camilo Hurtado Campos, 63, was apprehended by police last month after leaving his phone at a pizza restaurant. Staff went through the man’s phone to try and identify him and return the phone, but allegedly discovered photos and videos of Campos raping unconscious young boys between approximately 9 and 17 years old.
Fox 17 News Nashville first broke the news that Campos is living in the U.S. illegally.
Authorities say the rapes of “at least 10 children” were found on the phone, and detectives have identified at least three victims, CNN reported. Detectives say the children may not have even known they were raped because they were in such an unconscious state.
Five other people have come forward, identifying themselves as victims, according to a statement posted to Twitter by the Franklin Police Department.
During off hours, Campos, who has resided in the Franklin suburb of Nashville for 20 years, would allegedly stalk school playgrounds and recruit children to play soccer on his team, many of whom he would invite to his home after gaining their trust, according to a statement from police.
Authorities also said in the statement that the Campos drugged the victims before raping them.
“If you do the math, there could be a decade of victims that we don’t know about,” Franklin Lt. Charles Warner told CNN on July 11.
“There are undoubtedly more (victims). We are in the infancy of this investigation, and this could be the tip of the iceberg,” he added. “The people that are coming forward have felt such shame, such terror, and it’s very hard, I’m sure, to remember and process something so traumatic that happened to you, whether it was yesterday or whether it was 10 years ago.”
Fox 17 obtained a letter from the Williamson County Soccer League advising parents that Campos was not affiliated with the county or state league in any way. The letter says the man coached within the Hispanic community, but was not licensed or approved by a legitimate league, Fox reported.
