Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has urged Republicans not to impeach President Joe Biden.
The 81-year-old career politician claimed impeachment would be “bad for the nation.”
Former President Donald Trump was impeached twice.
Republican Reps. Byron Donalds and Marjorie Taylor Greene have spearheaded an effort to impeach the current president.
Rep. Greene introduced impeachment articles in May, arguing that the president is abusing his power by “endangering the security of the United States and thwarting the will of Congress.”
“Joe Biden has deliberately compromised our national security by refusing to enforce immigration laws and secure our border, allowed approximately 6 million illegals from over 160 countries to invade our country, deprived border patrol of the necessary resources and policies sufficient to protect our country, and his administration has willfully refused to maintain operational control as required by law,” Greene said in a statement.
Commenting on the efforts, McConnell did not hold back his condemnation.
“I said two years ago, when we had not one but two impeachments, that once we go down this path it incentivizes the other side to do the same thing,” said Senator McConnell, according to a report from the New York Times.
“Impeachment ought to be rare,” he said, adding, “This is not good for the country.”
Over the weekend, McConnell was heckled while speaking at the Fancy Farm picnic in Kentucky.

President Donald Trump shared a video of the heckling to his page on Truth Social, with the caption “I AGREE! ‘BOOOOO–RETIRE, RETIRE, RETIRE–BOOOOO!!!’”
