Rep. Greg Casar is being ruthlessly mocked online after staging a dramatic eight-hour-long “thirst strike” outside the Capitol to advocate for federally mandated water breaks in extreme heat.
The congressman was joined by other lawmakers, union members, and activists for his performance.
“It’s challenging and it’s hot, but it’s not as hot as it is in Texas,” Casar said as he kicked off his strike.
Those supporting the thirst strike held signs that read, “Water breaks = basic rights.”
“Yesterday was incredible. I was honored to be joined at my thirst strike by workers in Texas and across the nation—and by lots of colleagues pushing for federal heat safety protections,” the congressman tweeted on Wednesday. “9 hours without water or food, but I’m more energized than ever to get this done.”
The tweet included a dramatic image of him being tended to by activists.

Though it appears that the stunt was scheduled to represent a work day, online commentators ruthlessly mocked him for only doing it for eight hours.
Democrat Greg Casar went 8 hours without eating or drinking something.
To normal Americans, that’s just skipping breakfast or lunch at work.
To him, it’s a hunger strike that he set up media cameras for once it was over.
