Majority of Democrats Want Someone Other Than Biden For 2024 Nominee

Just 35 percent of Democrats want President Joe Biden to run for re-election in 2024, according to a new poll.

The poll, conducted by ABC/Washington Post, found that 56 percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents want a new Democratic presidential ticket.

The survey found that among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents, there is a 47-46 percent split on whether Donald Trump should be their 2024 nominee. This represents a 20-point drop in support compared to his 2020 nomination.

“In a head-to-head rematch, the poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates, finds a 48-46 percent Biden-Trump contest, essentially tied,” the pollsters report. “Among registered voters, the numbers reverse to 46-48 percent. That’s even while 52 percent of Americans say Trump should be 2 charged with a crime in any of the matters in which he’s under federal investigation, similar to views after the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.”

Biden had previously asserted that he would be running again in 2024, but appeared to change his tune during an interview with 60 Minutes last week.

“Sir, are you committed to running again, or are there certain conditions that have to be right?” correspondent Scott Pelley asked.

“Look, if I were to say to you, I’m running again, all of a sudden, a whole range of things come into play that I have — requirements I have to change and move and do,” Biden replied. “In terms of election laws. and it’s much too early to make that kind of decision. I’m a great respecter of fate. And so, what I’m doing is I’m doing my job. I’m gonna do that job. And within the timeframe that makes sense after this next election cycle here, going into next year, make a judgment on what to do.”

“You say that it’s much too early to make that decision,” Pelley followed up. “I take it the decision has not been made in your own head?”

“Look, my intention as I said to begin with is that I would run again,” the president said. “But it’s just an intention. But is it a firm decision that I run again? That remains to be seen.”

Another poll released earlier this month found that the most popular replacements for Biden would be Michelle Obama with 16 percent support, Hillary Clinton with six percent, and Vice President Kamala Harris who also has six percent.
