Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy said New York County district attorney Alvin Bragg will be held accountable for bringing charges against former president Donald Trump.
The speaker cited “politicized charges” brought against Trump by the New York DA in a statement.
“Alvin Bragg is attempting to interfere in our democratic process by invoking federal law to bring politicized charges against President Trump, admittedly using federal funds, while at the same time arguing that the peoples’ representatives in Congress lack jurisdiction to investigate this farce. Not so,” McCarthy wrote in a Tuesday statement.
“Bragg’s weaponization of the federal justice process will be held accountable by Congress.”

McCarthy previously commented on Trump’s potential arrest, claiming Bragg had harmed the country.
“Alvin Bragg has irreparably damaged our country in an attempt to interfere in our Presidential election,” McCarthy wrote following a Manhattan, New York grand jury’s Thursday decision to indict the former president. “As he routinely frees violent criminals to terrorize the public, he weaponized our sacred system of justice against President Donald Trump.”

“The American people will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account.”
Prior to the grand jury’s decision to indict Trump, Speaker McCarthy commented on the then-potential indictment as “political vengeance” against the former president.
“Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump,” the Speaker wrote last month following Trump’s announcement of an incoming arrest. “I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions.”
Trump was officially arrested upon entering the Manhattan courthouse and surrendering to authorities Tuesday afternoon.
“Heading to Lower Manhattan, the Courthouse. Seems so SURREAL — WOW, they are going to ARREST ME. Can’t believe this is happening in America. MAGA!” Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly before the arrest.
The former president’s indictment stems from allegedly falsified business records regarding a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels over an alleged sexual encounter with Trump in 2006.
Trump was charged with 34 counts for falsifying business records, according to the indictment leaked by Yahoo News.
Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor Greene responded to Trump’s arrest by referring to the Biden administration as a “failure.”
“They have nothing to campaign on, so they’ve decided to arrest President Trump, who is innocent, on the word of a porn star and a felon,” Greene said. “This is such a failure and this will not stand.”

“President Trump will be found innocent. This witch hunt will end. We will not tolerate it. We will not tolerate the hate of the left,” Greene said. “God bless America, God bless President Trump, God bless MAGA.”
