Jim Jordan Announces Speaker Run

'I Respectfully Ask For Your Support For Speaker Of The House Of Representatives'

Ohio Representative Jim Jordan has formally announced he will run for Speaker of the House.

On Wednesday, Jordan sent a letter to House Republicans citing successes made during the 118th Congress since January, though detailed “far-left progressive policies [that] are destroying our communities, our security, and our future.”

“We have soaring crime across the country. We have an administration with open-border policies that have caused chaos and left our country vulnerable,” Jordan wrote. “We’ve seen federal agencies turned on the American people—silencing speech online, targeting parents at school board meetings, and flagging pro-life Catholics as potential threats and we’ve witnessed blatant double standards in federal law enforcement. We continue to spend too much money and Americans are suffering under President Biden’s economy.”

The Ohio representative’s letter went on to detail other problems plaguing Americans and the House.

“We are at a critical crossroad in our nation’s history,” Jordan wrote. “Now is the time for our Republican conference to come together to keep our promises to Americans.”

“I respectfully ask for your support for Speaker of the House of Representatives,” he added.

Jordan’s Speakership run follows California Representative Kevin McCarthy’s removal from the office of Speaker of the House on Tuesday afternoon. The Ohio representative’s Wednesday letter did not mention McCarthy.

Several House Republicans have expressed support for a Jordan Speakership, including Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie, who did not support McCarthy’s removal. Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, who was an outspoken critic of McCarthy and spearheaded efforts to remove him as Speaker, also threw support behind the Ohio representative’s prospective Speakership.

“My mentor Jim Jordan would be great!” Gaetz wrote in a Tuesday X post.

Other House Republicans have thrown support behind former President Donald Trump as the new Speaker of the House, including Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Greene, an ardent Trump supporter who opposed McCarthy’s ousting, nominated Trump and suggested he would seek an end to the war in Ukraine, secure the nation’s southern border, and end politically weaponized government. A Trump Speakership would also make America energy independent again and pass Greene’s legislation which would end medical sex changes for minors and prevent biological men from participating in women’s sports, according to the Georgia representative.

“He has a proven 4 year record as President of the United States of America,” Greene wrote. “He received a record number of Republican votes of any Republican Presidential candidate!”

Texas Representative Troy Nehls also nominated the former President for Speaker of the House.

Other Republicans speculated to run for Speaker include Republican Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who also opposed McCarthy’s removal.

Shortly after the House voted to vacate the office of Speaker of the House, McCarthy announced he would not run for Speaker again.

“Unfortunately, 4% of our conference can join all the Democrats and dictate who can be the Republican Speaker in this House,” McCarthy said after his removal. “I believe I can continue to fight, maybe in a different manner.”

“I will not run for Speaker again. I’ll have the conference pick somebody else,” he added.

McCarthy is the first Speaker in U.S. history to be vacated from the seat.
