High School Students Stage Walkout After Being Told Mask Up or Leave

Students at Vernon Hills High School in Illinois walked out of school on Monday after being told they must wear masks to attend

A group of students from Vernon Hills High School in Illinois walked out of class Monday after being told they had to wear masks to attend class.

The demonstration came after Circuit Court Judge Raylene Grischow issued a temporary restraining order against Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s mandate requiring masks in schools to combat the spread of COVID-19.

A video on Twitter shows a crowd of students walking out of the school while being lauded by supporters.

Community High School District 128 told reporters that students who refused to wear masks recently held meetings with their principals. The students were allowed to explain their position and were given a chance to ask questions.

The school district said students were given three options on Monday: wear a mask to attend class, leave school and have a parent report the absence, or stay in the gym and complete classwork.

The district stated that it would still be implementing the mask mandate over the weekend. The exception would only be for students named in a lawsuit filed by more than 700 parents at nearly 150 school districts across the state.

The district said in their statement that the mask mandate has permitted both schools to remain open for in-person learning and extracurricular activities.

Late Monday, Democratic Attorney General Kwame Raoul issued a request to the 4th District Appellate Court in Springfield for an emergency stay of Grischow’s temporary restraining order. Raoul’s request is awaiting a response from the court.

Judge Grischow ruled Friday that Governor Pritzker had exceeded his authority in an emergency order requiring students and staff to wear face coverings. She ended other orders, too, including an order mandating that school employees be vaccinated.

The judge’s ruling stated that students should not be excluded from school for health reasons without family consent or a public health quarantine order.
