Biden Suggests 'High-Caliber Assault Rifle' Ban as 'Rational' Gun Control Option

President Joe Biden has suggested a ban on “high-caliber assault rifles” as a “rational” gun control option.

Biden also once again repeated a false claim that “you couldn’t buy a cannon when the Second Amendment was passed.”

Biden was pressed about potential gun control measures while speaking to reporters outside the White House on Monday

“It makes no sense to be able to purchase something that can fire up to 300 rounds,” Biden said. “The idea of these high-caliber weapons — there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of, about self-protection, hunting and I guess — and, remember, the Constitution, the Second Amendment was never absolute. You couldn’t buy a cannon when the Second Amendment was passed. You couldn’t go out and purchase a lot of weaponry.”

Biden previously remarked about cannon ownership during the Revolutionary War while he was campaigning for the presidency, as made the same point in April.

“From the very beginning, the Second Amendment didn’t say you can own any gun you want, big as you want,” Biden said during an April press conference. “You couldn’t buy a cannon when, in fact, the Second Amendment passed.”

His claim is incorrect. The Second Amendment does not place any limits on cannon ownership and never has.

The amendment does not mention limiting any form of weaponry. All that it states is, “a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

His repeated talking point has even been deemed false by Politifact, but he continues to make it.

On Sunday, the president and First Lady Jill Biden visited the families of the elementary school shooting in Uvalde.

As the Biden’s left mass at a local church, protesters chanted at the president to “do something,” to which he replied, “we will.”
