President Joe Biden claimed former President Donald Trump would sign a national abortion ban into law if he wins a second term in office in 2024.
In a Wednesday X post, the president referenced Trump’s previous remarks taking credit for the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022.
“While Donald Trump takes credit for killing Roe v. Wade and would sign a national abortion ban, we will always fight to protect a woman’s freedom to choose,” Biden wrote.

Biden’s claim that the former President would support a national abortion ban appear to be misleading according to an NBC interview with Trump released on Sunday.
During the interview, Trump told Meet The Press host Kristen Welker he would compromise with Democrats on abortion and said “both sides are gonna like me.”
Welker asked if Trump would sign a national 15-week abortion ban, similar to the 6-week abortion ban signed into law by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
“I would sit down with both sides and I’d negotiate something,” Trump said, declining to confirm or deny he would support a national 15-week abortion ban. “We’ll end up with peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years.”

Trump referred to Florida’s 6-week abortion ban as a “terrible mistake.”
During an interview with O. Kay Henderson on Radio Iowa on Monday, DeSantis slammed Trump’s comments on Florida’s heartbeat bill saying: “Protecting babies with heartbeats is not terrible.”
“Donald Trump may think it’s terrible, but I think protecting babies with heartbeats is noble and just, and I’m proud to have signed the heartbeat bill in Florida,” he said.

“I don’t know how you can even make the claim that you’re somehow pro-life if you’re criticizing states for enacting pro-life protections for babies that have heartbeats,” DeSantis continued. “And so I thought him saying that those bills were terrible, I think, was a terrible statement, and I think it’s a window into how he’s changing as he’s running this campaign. I think he’s changing in a way that is not consistent with the values of the people in Iowa.”
Shortly after SCOTUS released their decision overturning Roe v. Wade, Trump issued a statement referring to the ruling as “the biggest WIN for LIFE in a generation.”
Trump said the decisions were only made possible by his nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch, Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Justice Amy Coney Barrett during his time in office.
