Baby Formula Manufacturer Recalls Enfamil Product Batches Fearing Contamination

Reckitt, a British consumer goods manufacturer with American subsidiaries, announced the recall of Enfamil’s ProSobee Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula, concerned that specific batches might have been cross-contaminated with the bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii.

Reckitt announced the recall in a press release published on their website and listed the recalled batches:

ProSobee Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula in 12.9 oz containers was manufactured between August 2022 and September 2022. The products were distributed through retail stores nationwide in the U.S., Guam, and Puerto Rico. The batches in question can be identified by the number on the bottom of the can. Recalled product batches are ZL2HZF and ZL2HZZ both with a UPC Code of 300871214415 and a “Use By Date” of “1 Mar 2024.” The recall involves approximately 145,000 cans.

According to Reckitt, which produces the popular baby formula brand Enfamil through its American subsidiary Mead Johnson, no adverse incidents have been reported from the ingestion of these batches. “We are committed to the highest level of quality and safety and it is for this reason that we have taken this extraordinary measure,” the company wrote in their statement.

According to Reckitt, the batches have thus far tested negative for C. sakazakii and the manufacturer stressed that the recall was only issued under an abundance of caution. Calling it an “isolated situation,” Reckitt identified what they called the “source” of the possible contamination which they say was linked “to a material from a third party.”

“We have taken all appropriate corrective actions, including no longer sourcing this material from the supplier,” they said.

The Journal of Food Protection classifies the Cronobacter genus as “opportunistic pathogens” which, in infants, results in a “mortality rate of 40 to 80%.”

Reckitt asks consumers who purchased ProSobee Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula to check the bottom of the can for its bactch number. Cans with batch codes ZL2HZF and ZL2HZZ  and with a UPC Code of 300871214415 and a “Use By Date” of “1 Mar 2024” can be returned to its place of purchase for a full refund or should be disposed of immediately.
