Amtrak Removes Mask Requirement for Passengers and Employees

The service acknowledges the 'federal court decision in Florida to strike down the CDC mask mandate for public modes of transportation'

As of Monday, Amtrak has ended its mask requirement for all passengers and employees.

In an email sent to all employees Monday night, the American Track National Railroad Passenger Corporation, or Amtrak, said, “Amtrak passengers and employees are no longer required to wear masks while on board trains or in stations.”

After a federal judge in Florida struck down the Biden Administration’s mandate for masking on public transportation, the company said that it “acknowledges today’s federal court decision in Florida to strike down the CDC mask mandate for public modes of transportation. Amtrak’s updated policy follows the Administration’s approach to this issue.”

The notice went on to state that mask usage would continue to be acceptable on a voluntary basis, should employees or passengers feel the need. Amtrack said, “Mask usage is strongly recommended for those at personal high risk (e.g. not fully vaccinated or boosted, medical issue or personal situation),” the Amtrak email said. “Mask usage is strongly recommended for those who live or work in a high-risk community, as defined by CDC guidance.”

The email further noted that employees should keep a mask on hand, as certain individuals may be at a higher health risk and prefer masking while in proximity to others. As a “professional courtesy,” they suggested employees should be ready and willing to wear a mask in those instances.

“Extending this courtesy is consistent with our Amtrak Values, including Do the Right Thing, Put Customers First and Excel Together,” the email states.

Amtrak updated its website with the news, letting customers know of the change, saying, “While Amtrak passengers and employees are no longer required to wear masks while on board trains or in stations, masks are welcome and remain an important preventive measure against COVID-19. Anyone needing or choosing to wear one is encouraged to do so.

The decision from Amtrak comes as multiple airlines announced they have removed the mask mandate on airplanes and at airports after a federal judge ruled that the requirement was “unlawful.”

The airlines that have removed their mask mandates include American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue and Alaska Airlines.
