The feud between former President Trump and his former Attorney General Bill Barr continues, with both men trading barbs as Barr says he would testify against Trump if asked by Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Barr is one of many conservatives issuing sharp criticism of the former president’s conduct, both personally and professionally, while lending support to the idea that the criminal indictment filed last week against Trump is valid.
Trump has continued verbal attacks against the former AG, driven in large part by a sense that Barr has been deeply disloyal by not supporting Trump’s assertions that the 2020 election was stolen and for backing the numerous attacks against him, which many view as being politically motivated.
Last week, Barr said during an interview that he was “shocked by the degree of sensitivity of these documents and how many there were … and I think the counts under the Espionage Act that he willfully retained those documents are solid counts.”
He added, “If even half of it is true, then he’s toast. It’s a very detailed indictment and it’s very damning.”
This past Sunday during an interview on Face the Nation, Barr took aim at Trump again, referring to him as “a consummate narcissist” and a “fundamentally flawed person.”
Barr said, “He’s like a defiant 9-year-old kid who is always pushing the glass towards the edge of the table, defying his parents from stopping him from doing it,” while adding “our country can’t be a therapy session for a troubled man like this.”
Trump responded on his social media platform Truth Social by blasting his former AG.
“So nice to see that Sloppy, Low Energy RINO Bill Barr, gets loudly booed and shouted at everywhere he goes! He is sooo bad for America,” he wrote.
After Barr’s comments last week regarding the 37-count criminal indictment, Trump referred to him as a “Gutless Pig!” on Truth Social.
During the interview on Face the Nation, Barr said he would be willing to testify against Trump in the impending trial over alleged mishandling of classified documents, which has been tentatively scheduled to begin in August.
“He provoked this whole problem himself. Yes, he’s been the victim of unfair witch hunts in the past, but that doesn’t obviate the fact that he’s also a fundamentally flawed person who engages in reckless conduct,” Barr said. “And that leads to calamitous situations like this, which are very disruptive and hurt any political causes he’s associated with.”
He added, “This was a case that’s entirely of his own making.”
