Twitter to Allow Publishers and Media Companies to Charge Users to View Articles


Twitter will soon allow publishers and media companies to charge users to view their articles.

The upcoming feature, which Musk announced in a tweet on Saturday, will allow users to pay a one-time fee to read articles from outlets they do not subscribe to.

“Rolling out next month, this platform will allow media publishers to charge users on a per article basis with one click. This enables users who would not sign up for a monthly subscription to pay a higher per article price for when they want to read an occasional article,” Musk wrote. “Should be a major win-win for both media orgs & the public.”

It is unclear if this feature will be available to smaller independent outlets and journalists or only to organizations that pay the $1,000 fee for “Twitter Verification for Organizations.”

The verification system for organizations was announced in December and provides a company and its affiliates with a gold check mark. Each affiliate costs the organization an additional $50, according to a report from the Verge.

“We are taking Twitter Blue’s rollout as an opportunity to further enhance and distinguish organizations on Twitter,” the platform’s announcement said. “As a Twitter Verification for Organizations subscriber, an organization can link any number of their affiliated individuals, businesses and brands to their account. When they do, affiliated accounts will get a small badge of their parent company’s profile picture next to their blue or gold checkmark.”

Regular users can pay $8 a month for blue check verification.
